Michele Obama Talks Hooping and Obesity
Mar 27The first lady, who has made childhood obesity her key issue, asked the food makers to provide healthier options at supermarkets, with easier-to-understand labels, because “if there is anyone here who can sell food to our kids, it’s you.”
The Grocery Manufacturers Association has supported the first lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign, but Obama clearly was urging GMA members “to move faster and to go farther,” according to the Wall Street Journal and reported at http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2010/03/16/first-lady-asks-food-makers-for-healthier-fare/
The Obama home isn’t immune to food makers’ ad campaigns, Obama said. “I was talking to Sasha about who I was speaking to, and she said, ‘Who are these people?’ I said, ‘They make the food that we eat.’ ‘Oh, like Honey Nut Cheerios? Part of a healthy breakfast?’ ”
“If you all create the supply, we know there will be a demand,” she told the companies. “If you have any doubt about that, just look at what we did for the hula hoop. I hula hooped.”
While the First Lady may have encouraged the all-ready widely spread hooping craze, she is not offically credited for its resurgence. Many credit the band, The String Cheese Incident, which tossed large rings of tubing out into its audience to get them up and moving. From there, the Rave Culture took it into clubs and dancing and then several different branches of hooping grew from there.
That said, Mrs. Obama did help to bring hooping mainstream. Meanwhile, hooping instructors like myself can also share in the credit!
At the same time, Mrs. Obama also talked about the serious topic of childhood obesity and her Let’s Move inititive. Loopdihoops is doing its part to play it forward. Stay tuned for our Hooping Tour, coming to a park near you!
